Tonight I reconnected with arguably the first thing I was ever extremely passionate about that could have resulted in a career: snowboarding.
A friend invited me to see Warren Miller's Ticket To Ride. It was awesome, in the legitimate sense of the word. It was awe-inspiring.
If I hadn't picked up a guitar, there's an excellent chance I'd have become a snowboard bum and eventually a professional snowboarder. I loved it. I still do love it. But from the ages of 10 to 13, it consumed me. Then I got a guitar, and, well, here I am.
But I'm getting back into snowboarding. My friend Gary, the same friend who invited me to the movie, also asked me a while back if I'd be interested in teaching snowboarding this winter (he's a ski instructor. I met him sailing). At first I was hesitant, but then I was like, sure! Why not? So I'm doing it.
I'm excited to see how much snowboarding still means to me. Maybe reconnecting with it will spark new inspiration on a musical level. If nothing else, this forces me to get my endurance up (I've been a slacker on exercise) and take care of myself. I can't keep up with five year olds if I'm not in my best form!
