Motivation Is A Drug

I would know - I'm completely addicted to motivation.  Motivation is often the first step to its far more important counterpart known as commitment.

Commitment is what keeps you going when the motivation isn't there.  And it's not always easy.  Motivation is much easier to find, and you feel an immediate effect.  "I can do this!" is great.  It's necessary to be great, but the maintenance work, the commitment, is what will make sure you actually get to be great.

Motivation is the new idea you have to improve whatever.  Commitment is the time and energy it's going to implement the idea AND it's also the changes you're going to have to make in your daily life.  If you want to be an author, then you're going to have to spend a lot more time writing.  Same with anything - that's the commitment.  The motivation is the pretty side, commitment is the messy (but beautiful) side where the work is done.

It's great to have a hit of motivation.  I have a hit every day, and it reminds me of what I'm committed to.
