Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around is one of my favorite Tom Petty songs, and possibly one of my favorite songs ever.  Stevie Nicks delivers it perfectly.  Tom and Mike (Campbell) didn’t write it for her, but realized it worked better from a female’s perspective.

Let’s take a look at the lyrics:

Baby you’ll come knocking on my front door
Same old line you used to use before
That’s the game well what am I supposed to do
I didn’t know what I was getting into

That last line.  Isn’t that always the case?  I didn’t know what I was getting into.  I can say that about nearly everything.  Good or bad.

So you’ve had a little trouble in town
Now you’re keeping some demons down
Stop draggin’ my…Stop draggin’ my
Stop draggin’ my heart around

That’s such a great visual.  It’s so good I can feel it.

This next verse is my favorite, and it’s one of my favorite verses ever.

It’s hard to think about what you wanted
It’s hard to think about what you lost
This doesn’t have to be the big get even
This doesn’t have to be anything at all

Oh. My. God.  Is there any song anywhere that captures that feeling of it doesn’t have to be like this?  It doesn’t have to be anything at all.  It could be nothing if only you would make it nothing.

And the response

I know you really wanna tell me goodbye
I know you really wanna be your own girl

Tom, once again, in for the kill with the simplest of lyrics.

Baby you could never look me in the eye
Yeah you buckle with the weight of the words
Stop draggin’ my…Stop draggin’ my
Stop draggin’ my heart around

Buckle with the weight of the words.  I’ve been there.  I’ve been the person who wasn’t looked in the eye.  It’s not a fun place to be.

There’s people runnin’ round loose in the world
Ain’t got nothing better to do
Than make a meal of some bright eyed kid
You need someone looking after you

Some people like tearing other people down.  I’m a bright eyed kid.  That’s for sure.  And I probably do need someone looking after me.  In fact, at this present moment, I have several people looking after me.  I can’t thank them enough for being there.  They know who they are.

But back to the bright eyed kid lyric.  No one gets through this industry without scars and mistakes.  No one gets through it unscathed.  Ask anyone in it.  If you make it through untouched you probably weren’t really there.

And then they do it again!

I know you really wanna tell me goodbye
I know you really wanna be your own girl

Baby you could never look me in the eye
Yeah you buckle with the weight of the words
Stop draggin’ my…Stop draggin’ my
Stop draggin’ my heart around

As I’ve said before, I love Tom Petty.  And I love Fleetwood Mac.  So naturally I’m in love with this song.  It has come into play in my life countless times for countless reasons.
