Sound City / Mick Fleetwood

February 25, 2013

It’s 12:29AM.

I finally watched Sound City today, and I just wanted to cry throughout the whole thing.  I become incredibly emotional when it comes to music history and music in general.  I was on the verge of tears throughout most of Sound City.

I’m listening to one of the albums that was recorded at Sound City - one that had a profound impact on me when I was 13: Nirvana’s Nevermind.  It’s also the record that literally saved Sound City.

Sound City was a recording studio in Van Nuys, California.  It has an amazing history and for fans of rock n roll and its history it’s a must-see.  Same for musicians, producers, engineers, and anyone who aspires to be any of the aforementioned professions.  Just take a look at the records that were made there.

There were so many great quotes, but one that stuck with me was from Mick Fleetwood.  The Buckingham Nicks / Fleetwood Mac version of Fleetwood Mac would not have come to be without Sound City.  How does that make you feel?  Just the thought of Stevie, Lindsey, Mick, Christine, and John not coming together makes me want to cry.

Towards the end of the film, Mick is sitting down with Dave Grohl and they’re talking about how with technology these days people often try to go it alone in the music industry (hence the decline of bands).  As I’ve said before, I love Mick Fleetwood.  I have more in common with Mick Fleetwood than I do with most people.  Believe it or not, we often find ourselves in very similar situations.  He has always managed to pull through and I intend to do the same.

Anyway.  Back to the movie.

Mick says (in regards to technology):

I think the downside these days is thinking ‘I can do this all on my own.’ Yes, you can do this all on your own, but you’ll be a much happier human being to do it with other human beings, and I can guarantee you [that].

I can’t say it better myself.  One reason I have a band is so that I don’t have to do this alone.  I don’t want to do it alone.  I like doing this with other people.  People whom I love dearly and want to grow with, see the world with, and change the world with.
