It’s not even 8:30 in the morning and I’m blogging for today already. What is happening!?
So my band - Canary - is currently in the midst of planning a trip to Austin for another round of SXSW. We went last year and it was a great experience. But we didn’t do it right. Didn’t promote well enough, played too many shows that were not actually IN Austin, didn’t have our own transportation, didn’t meet enough people - I can keep going, but you get the idea. We were young(er) and were so thrilled that we were going to SXSW that the rest didn’t seem to matter. We were going to SXSW!
This year, should we go, it’s different. The stakes are higher, and we’re almost an entirely different band (only Alex and I remain from last year’s lineup - another story I will tell someday). So much has happened since last year’s trip. SXSW, if nothing else, was an eye-opener for some of us. There were 2,000 bands there. It’s not glamorous - it’s a grind.
Part of me wants to go to make up for the mistakes of last year. And another part of me doesn’t want to go at all because it’s so big and I don’t think we have enough of a buzz at the moment to drum up anything that we couldn’t get elsewhere. There are other - smaller - festivals, and most of the people we want to talk to are either in New York, a four hour drive, California - and I’ll gladly spend the money I’d spend on SXSW on a well organized trip to Los Angeles, or right here in Boston.
All that being said, I’d still love to go. We have secured a couple of shows in Austin, and there are going to be tons of awesome people there. We’ll see. We really don’t have much time to figure it out. If you or anyone you know is involved with SXSW, hit me up - email@example.com - I’d love to talk some more.
