So...About That...

I was supposed to write about how my scheduling went just before I went to LA to record.

Well, it went.  I wasn't the best at it.  I noticed that on days where I didn't teach, I did better with keeping things together.  I think that was because I felt less pressure around my tasks.  Weird.  Then when I was in LA, I did not keep to a schedule because I had no idea when I would be recording or eating dinner or getting home.

I'm on Day Three of my second Whole30 of 2016.  Between my trip to LA, going to Maine for a weekend, and then going to Austin, I needed a reset.  I'm also the type of person who needs limits, even self-imposed limits.  I, like Billy Joel, go to extremes.  I ate eight scones in less than 24 hours while I was in Austin.  Yup.  Eight.  On a Whole30 I will have zero scones.

I'm almost back into a routine.  I head back to LA in 20 days (!!) for the ASCAP I Create Music Expo.  And between now and then, I'd better get my act together.  Including things for the Expo.  Including a better upkeep of this blog.

I will be sharing my songs with you all in the near future.  And I'm excited about that.  I know I'm biased, but they sound real good.

This..has been a scattered post.  I'm gonna go now.

Road Trip to SXSW

March 11, 2013

For the next 10 days my blogging may be minimal and sporadic at best.

We’re on our way to SXSW.  Alex and two of our friends, Joe and John.  It’s everyone’s first major road trip and we’re all excited.  Hopefully we don’t all want to kill each other when we get back to Boston.  Especially Alex and me.  Nah, we’ll be fine.  His parents agreed with us tonight when we said that we’re practically related.

Alright I’m tired.

Yayayayayay!

PS - we’re in Philadelphia for the night, and Alex had me drive by the diner in Silver Linings Playbook (it’s right near his house).  I loved it and now I really want to see SLP for a third time.

The Voice - Not the TV Show (Probably Part One of Many)

March 9, 2013

For starters, hello and thank you to my new followers!

I’ve started taking vocal lessons.  It’s something I should have done years ago, but I didn’t.  Oh well.  I’m doing it now and that’s all that matters.

My relationship with my voice is probably pretty typical.  I don’t love it, I don’t hate it, I think I sound like a 12 year old when I hear myself back.  I also talk pretty (very) fast.  I was never compelled to sing like I was to play guitar.  There were a couple of brief periods where I thought I wanted to sing, but I really didn’t.  Now I want to.  I need to.  And I need to want to.  And I do.  Believe me, I do.

I emailed a teacher asking if I could study with her, but she’s on sabbatical until the fall so that’s not happening.  But she wrote me the most inspiring and flattering email ever encouraging me to sing.  She also mentioned she doesn’t teach outside of Berklee anymore, but she would have taken me on as a student because I really intrigued her.  It was really sweet.

So I sought out a friend of mine (he sings, writes, and plays guitar in the Naked Stills - his name is Rocco) to help me develop my voice.  He is an incredible singer and he really understands how the voice works.  I’ve only had one lesson so far, but I really enjoyed it.  It’s gonna be a lot of work, but that’s okay.  It’s more than okay.  I have embraced the grind.  I embraced it long ago with guitar and writing.  Why should singing be different?

If anyone has any tips on singing, I’m all ears.  And let me know if you’re gonna be at SXSW!
